Heraclitus, also spelled Heracleitus, (c.540 - 480 B.C.E), was a Greek philosopher remembered for his cosmology, in which fire forms the basic material principle of an orderly universe. He was perhaps the first Western philosopher to go beyond physical theory in search of metaphysical foundations and moral applications, and some consider him, along with Parmenides, the most significant of the Pre-Socratic philosophers. His idea of a universe in constant change but with an underlying order or reason (which he called Logos) forms the essential foundation of the European worldview. He is known to his contemporaries as the 'dark’ philosopher, so-called because his writings were so difficult to understand.
