Olympias (c. 375–316 BCE) was an ambitious and violent ruler of ancient Greece. She was the daughter of Neoptolemus I king of Epirus, the wife of Philip II, who ruled over Macedonia and the mother of Alexander the Great, who conquered the territory from Greece to northwest India, establishing one of the largest kingdoms of his time. Olympias was the second wife of Philip II of Macedon. Olympias was the driving force behind Alexander's rise to the throne and was accused of having a hand in the assassination of Philip by Pausanias of Oretis. After Alexander's death, she fought for her grandson but was defeated by Cassander.
